The truth about U.S. waterboarding, found at

Five Minutes Well Spent
Keeping waterboarding as an interrogation technique is not the slippery slope some say it is.

By Jonah Goldberg

Less than five minutes.

That’s the total amount of time the United States has waterboarded terrorist detainees. How many detainees? Three. Who were these detainees?

One was Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, “the principle architect of the 9/11 attacks” according to the 9/11 Report, and the head of al-Qaeda’s “military committee.” Linked to numerous terror plots, he is believed to have financed the first World Trade Center bombing, helped set up the courier system that resulted in the infamous Bali bombing, and cut off Danny Pearl’s head.
A second was Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, the head of al-Qaeda operations in the Persian Gulf. He allegedly played a role in the 2000 millennium terror plots and was the mastermind behind the USS Cole attack that killed 17 Americans.

The third was Abu Zubaydah, said to be al-Qaeda’s chief logistics operative and Osama bin Laden’s top man after Ayman al Zawahri. It is believed that Zubaydah essentially ran al-Qaeda’s terror camps and recruitment operations. After he was waterboarded, Zubaydah reportedly offered intelligence officers a treasure trove of critical information. He was waterboarded just six months after the 9/11 attacks and while the anthrax scare was still ongoing.

John Kiriakou, a former CIA officer who witnessed the interrogation, told ABC’s Brian Ross: “The threat information that he provided disrupted a number of attacks, maybe dozens of attacks.”

He divulged, according to Kiriakou, “al-Qaeda’s leadership structure” and identified high-level terrorists the CIA didn’t know much, if anything, about. It’s been suggested that Zubaydah and al-Nashiri’s confessions in turn led to the capture of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

And that’s it. Less than five minutes, three awful men, five years ago.

(We don’t know how long, exactly, each was waterboarded, but reports suggest that Zubaydah lasted between 30 and 35 seconds, and Khalid Sheik Mohammed lasted the longest — between 90 seconds and three minutes.)

The reason these facts are important is simple. For several years, human rights groups, the media, and partisan opponents of the Bush administration and the war on terror have tried to portray the U.S. as a “torture state” that has completely abdicated its decency, its principles, and even its soul under the leadership of a president who believes in an ominous-sounding “unitary executive” branch. We’ve been barreling down a “slippery slope,” making America indistinguishable from Hitler’s Germany and Stalin’s Russia.
Yet none of these interrogations were the result of a “rogue” CIA or the mad whims of a “torture presidency.” The relevant Democratic congressional leadership for intelligence — including current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Jay Rockefeller, and former Sen. Bob Graham — were briefed on CIA operations more than once. “Among those being briefed, there was a pretty full understanding of what the CIA was doing,” Porter Goss, who chaired the House Intelligence Committee from 1997 to 2004 before becoming CIA director, told the Washington Post. “And the reaction in the room was not just approval, but encouragement.”

As for the slippery-slope caterwauling, the opposite is true. The slope toward more torture and abuse has gone up, not down, and it is today more difficult to climb than ever. According to existing law and Justice Department rulings, the practice has been proscribed for several years now — except, that is, for the thousands of U.S. servicemen who’ve been subjected to it by the U.S. military as part of their training.

The current debate over legislation to ban waterboarding in all circumstances stinks of political opportunism. Democrats want to claim that Republicans are “pro-torture” if they vote against the legislation. Others are hoping to advance criminal prosecutions of CIA operatives who used the techniques sparingly and with approval from both the White House and Congress, and from both parties.

I don’t like waterboarding, and I hope we never use it again. I have respect for those who believe it should be banned in all circumstances. But I do not weep that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed spent somewhere between .03 and .06 seconds feeling like he was drowning for every person he allegedly helped murder on 9/11.

Then again, I think it would be horrific if we used that logic to justify waterboarding. It’s not a technique that should be used for punishment. Nor do I think that evidence obtained from forced confessions should be used in trial. Those are paving stones on the road to a torture state.

But, given the circumstances at the time, I think the decision to waterboard these three men was right and certainly defensible.

The editors of USA Today disagree. They say that the decision to use waterboarding “was understandable in the frenzied aftermath of the 9/11 and anthrax attacks. What’s inexplicable, however, is why, after having several years to assess the matter deliberately, the Bush administration continues to resist efforts to ban waterboarding.”

It’s only inexplicable if you think we’ll never have a “frenzied” moment like that again. Let’s hope.

"It is not the noise of the shout of war... It is the sound of music and revelry." (Exodus 32:18)"

So said Moses to Joshua when the latter heard "the sounds of war" rising from the Israelite camp. While the two leaders had been atop Mount Sinai, communing with God, their people had decided to fashion an idol and throw a party. And all hell broke loose.

---Ebay advertisement for the new "Hell's Bells 2"

For those of you unfamiliar with Hell's Bells, it was a film made a number of years ago confronting the moral attrocities of the modern music culture.

Now, they have an up-to-date version of the film, "Hell's Bells 2"

It's 6.5 hours long, so perhaps even if you get your hands on a copy it will take multiple sittings, but I think it may well be a worthwhile thing to do.

excerpt from "Exchanging the Truth for Lies: the Myth of Modern Spirituality"
I was listening to an excerpt from a speech on the Christian station the other day, and was interested enough to buy a copy of the speech on CD. It was given at Proclamation Presbyterian church in Philadelphia (PCA) on April 8. The following is a list the author, Dr. Peter Jones, gives near the beginning.
He starts off his speech speaking of the significance of the cultural revolution (or devolution) of the 1960's and how it was a complete cutting-off of the culture from its Christian base.
The following list is of "victories" won in that revolution:

"The victory of:

the sexually liberated over sexually inhibitted
the sexually active over young virgins
recreational sex over procreational sex
condoms over abstinence
cohabitation over marriage
divorce over lifelong monogamy
a woman's right to abort her child over the unborn child's right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
collapsing birthrate over the Baby Boom
women as "breadwinners" over women as bread-makers
feminists over the patriarchs
Ms. over Miss and Mrs.
humankind over mankind (and now: earthkind)
childrens' rights over parents' rights

moral chaos over moral consensus
moral ambiguity over moral clarity

the "me" generation over the "we" generation
immediate gratification over deferred gratification
guilt-free shameless self-consciousness over a sensitive conscience
lust over modesty
self-interested lying over spontaneous truth-telling
ruthless commercialism over honest business practices
new history over patriotic history
Columbus as villain over Columbus as hero
the multi-culturalists over the American melting-pot
the "pluribus" over the "unum" [for you Canadians: on our money is the phrase "E Pluribus Unum, meaning "out of many, one"]

Well, thus concludes my latest visit to the Maple Leaf State.

Thursday I left around 8 am and drove up there. Saved myself a few minutes by using a shortcut I had forgotten about.
Amy rode with me, so she could spend a couple extra days with Alicia's little sister Maria. Drive her mom insane, etc.
So thursday afternoon I got to pick Alicia and her younger bro up from work at the greenhouse. I got there a few minutes early so I had to wait around in the hot sun for a bit til she came out.Oh well, she was worth the wait :)

After that we went back to her place and I got directions to my friend heidi's house in Orangeville while Alicia showered and packed. Around 7 we got out of there and headed to Subway for dinner, then set out for O'ville.
Got to O'ville at about 9:30, just in time to watch "Hostage" with Bruce Willis. Good movie, but Bruce needs to expand his repertoire for roles. Seems every movie his family's in danger.

Friday, we went to Mike and Tricia's wedding and hour away in Guelph. It was really good to see them again, since it had been 2 years or so. I have a lot of respect for the both of them, and I think it's awesome that they're all married now. They inspire me. They're both examples of th ekind of Christian I want to be. Hard to explain it any better than that.

Friday afternoon, we watched Thumb Wars and Thumbtanic, then "Drunken Master" with Jackie Chan. All 3 were HILARIOUS, and I recommend them all.
After that, around 7, Joel Muis (whom I also haven't seen in a couple years) arrived to stay the night. We played games and stuff and had a lovely ol' time.

Saturday, we went to Canada's Wonderland. We met up with some other friends of ours at the gate. Some guys we were expecting to come didn't show (turns out somethin' came up and they didn't have a ride), and one girl was unlucky enough to get a job that weekend and couldn't skip out on training.
We had a lot of fun though. I don't like roller coasters so I held stuff for 'em when they went on, but I was fine with it. I got my money's worth at the Water Park. We spend an hour or so in the wave pool, went on some rafting ride, then turned "Lazy River" tubing into aquatic bumper cars :) hope those people we rammed into weren't too mad.

Drove back to Alicia's saturday night, got in around 1:30 am (driving is hard at night. thank goodness for Red Bull).
We managed to get to church in the morning regardless (thank God for creating coffee). Amy (my sis) was feeling sick, though, and stayed home.
Later that day, Mom and Mrs. K. drove Amy to the hospital just across the border near Niagara Falls b/c her stomach ache had been goin' for a few days, her temperature was up, and she had pain in her appentixal area (whatever that word is).

Turns out her appendix was inflamed, and that evening she had surgery to have it removed. It had bursted, so there was some gunk they had to get out.
But since Mom was at the hospital, someone had to take the other kids (whom my mom had driven up in the minivan) up to Campfire Summer Bible Camp. Me to the rescue. I called my boss, told him I'd be a day late, and drove 'em all up there on Monday.
Not that I minded the idea. I hadn't been to Campfire in a couple years, and wanted to see their brand-spankin-new campground. We got there (a nice 100-degree day) and I said hi to a load of people I knew there, then we stayed for the opening and headed for home. Alicia and I stopped at Heidi's house on the way back to pick up a freezer pack I'd left and Alicia's camera.

tuesday morning I drove over to Lewiston to pick up my car (man I missed that thing. The minivan stinx). Drove alicia home, watched "I, Robot" and "Lion King 1/2", then it was time to leave.

Drove home.

Now here I am.

Amy developed a clog in her intestines and they're trying to unplug it with tubes up her nose. Hopefully she'll be able to leave the hospital soon (it's been a week now), but Dad and the Bogedains just left today to drive up there so the other American kids can get back home and so Dad can be with Mom and Amy.

that's it for now.
Life is exciting. Make it stop.

yes yes it's been a while.

Well, Alicia came down for 11 days. She flew in to Baltimore and I drove to pick her up from the airport. All went decently, but there was a traffic jam on the way home that sent us looking for a detour. Took an extra hour to get home, but at least she was there with me :)

We went to the ocean that saturday with mom and my sister Amy. Got burned. silly me. Did you know the backs of your knees could burn?
And it hurts when you kneel down for a week?

The rest of the week was also good. Tuesday night we had a blast at Glenn Beck on Ice (conservative radio personality. No ice included). We laughed at and about stupid people, etc. good stuff.

Then last monday I drove her to the airport again, said goodbye, and spent 3 hours getting home again b/c I took the wrong exit. I thought "oh, I won't take 95 to 476 like I'm supposed to, I'll just go up 202 thru norristown.
Which sent me wading through countless little towns at 25 mph.

Further, our friend Harold Sikkema and his gf (also our friend) Andrea Hopman came down from Ontario to visit for the weekend.
Fun.
Beach.
No burn :)

Now I'm here. Gotta make final plans for my trip to Ontario July 7th-11th. Some good friends of mine are getting married that friday, and I promised myself I'd be there. Not sure if they care one way or another, but I owe a lot to them, more than they'll ever know.
That saturday, we'll be checking out "Canada's Wonderland". I, Alicia, and up to 18 other members of the "Table 12" crew (club from www.ycc.ca/forums)

that's it for now. No thoughts except this unoriginal one:
why do parents take pictures of their kids naked in the bathtub?

The Super IQ Test
How Smart Are You Really?
Brian, your Super IQ score is 133

Your overall intelligence quotient is the result of a scientifically-tested formula based on how many questions you answered correctly. But it's only part of what we learned about you from your answers on the test. We also determined the way you process information.

The way you think about things makes you a Complex Intellectual. This means you are highly intelligent and have extraordinarily strong verbal and math skills. Compared to others you are a highly conceptual and complex thinker and are able to understand information in an abstract form. You also show great attention to detail. In fact, it's hard to find something you're not good at.

How did we determine that your thinking style is that of a Complex Intellectual? When we examined your test results further, we analyzed how you scored on 8 dimensions of intelligence: spatial, organizational, abstract reasoning, logical, mechanical, verbal, visual and numerical. The 3 dimensions you scored highest on combine to make you a Complex Intellectual. Only 6 out of 1,000 people have this rare combination of abilities.

So long, So long.
You all missed me tremendously.

Lately I have been wasting time. Wasting time on Diablo2. I have made a sorceress, 2 more barbarians. all lvl 72 or higher
I'm too good at this.

Other than that...Alicia's coming down in a couple of weeks. Flying to Baltimore on June 9 (apparently there are no flights from Buffalo to Philly those days). I'll pick her up in Baltimore, drive a couple hours back to Pennsylvania, and then yay.
Other upcoming events?
June 14, I'm going to the "Glenn Beck on Ice" tour. It has nothing to do with ice, but you'd have to be a fan of his radio show to understand that one.
June 10, we're having a grad party for 5 kids from our church. 4 used to go to the private church-run school that I attended all 12 years, but now since the school has disbanded due to loss of people, they are graduating from 3 different school: Norristown High, Abington High, and Plymouth-Whitemarsh High. Crazy stuff.
But the thinger should be fun. I'm not in charge of any organization, but since it's held at the church building, (and since I'm a member of the COA) mine mother asked for "permission" to use the church building.
Like anyone really would say now. The janitor's son is one of the graduates :P

more later.

Just an update here.
This week I just barely saved my Diablo 2 characters from expiration online. I hadn't played in 87 days, so they were 3 days from expiration. whew....had to buy a new copy of the game though, b/c our other copy we lost the installation code.

Who did I save? behold:

Patriarch Ubermensch: Barbarian
Specialty: Concentrate, whirlwind, and necessary warcries
Weilds: Breath of the Dying Colossus Blade
Wears: Enigma Archon Plate, and some really good boots, belt, gloves, and either Immortal Kings Helm, or Arreat's Face helm. I forget
Other stuff: two Stone of Jordan Rings, an Annihilus Charm (adds one to skills, resist stuff a bit), and finally, some amulet that makes me resist everything ??% and i think gives me a bonus level to all skills.

well, that's my pride and joy. I also have a lvl 77 Necro with the Trang-oul set and a kick-butt Fire Golem.
And, a Paladin with some nifty flying hammers, the Griswold set, and some handy auras.

Yes, I spent a lot of time on those characters. And, admittedly, money too. Yes, I bought some of those items. So sue me. It's not cheating, just making friends via money :P. thank you Godlyitems.com and that other place. that other place especially for making all non-ladder stuff 50% off and for giving me some really good free stuff when my order was late.

Yesterday I had no lunch. My boss never said "let's eat lunch" and I never suggested it, so we ended up working right through noon.
I discovered, though, how my brain loses abilities without proper sustenance. I ended up cutting pieces of wire-mold to short 4 times. It was very irritating.

Anyway, today I discovered another display case at 7-11 that has REAL food I can buy for lunch. They have, for example, such delicassies as Banana Bread. No more corn muffins!

Yes, that's sad. I live at home but I'm not able to get up early enough to actually make myself a real sandwich. I'll cry myself a river later.
But hey, today I made a real sandwich. 2 slices of ham with mayo on potato bread. And behold, it was very good.

When I got home this afternoon (after picking dad up at work at Kohls) I..well...came home. I surfed the web, talked to people, and then Alicia called and we discussed the clean/unclean laws of Leviticus.
Our discoveries: Pigs are unclean because, while they divide the hoof, they do not chew the cud. And also locust and grasshoppers make nice kosher meals. That's gotta be better than that matza crap (however that's spelled).
But hey, I'm not jewish. I'm a good ol' christian. I do'nt have to offer sacrifices in the evening and whenever I become unclean.
You know what? that's what bugs me about present-day Jews. They don't believe the Messiah has come, and yet they don't follow the Old Testament laws at alll except when it comes to eating kosher foods at Passover. Then again, most American Jews are essentially aetheistic.

anyway, enough for now. I'm tired

What has happened?
I shall tell.

That old car of mine? The Mazda 323? The headgasket went.
How convenient that USAA Insurance is giving me $1300 for it due to my recent accident.

Needing a new car, then, I went out shopping. We tried a used car dealer we know, but all he had to offer that I could buy in the foreseeable future was a $1500 Chevy Corsica w/ 40k miles on it. A good deal, but not reliable enough for me. I needed a car that would last a long time before breaking. I needed something with a WARRANTY.

So I proceeded to the Volkswagon dealership. They do indeed have a first-time buyers' program for those of us with little cash, no credit, and no co-signer. We found a 2001 Jetta there and put it on the list of potentials.

Then, we tried the Mazda and Toyota dealers to see what they could do. They couldn't sell to a no-credit no-co-signer like me.
So they referred me to Scion (which my bro had already researched).
I went there, and a few hour later, I bought a 2005 Scion xA with no bells-and-whistles. Just the basic list of standard features:

Pioneer CD player and 6-speaker system
power windows
power locks
power mirrors
power steering
ABS
15 inch rims.
rear windsshield wiper
and of course the climate controls and actual CLOTH SEATS>

yessir, not a bad list for a $13000 car. I got the 75k mile warranty, and I'll be paying for it for 5-6 years.

zoooom :)

So yes, that happened in January.

Now, February, mon canadiette, elle arrive a la aeroport a' huit heures dans juedi. Oui oui. oo la la :)
Je suis excite!!
J'ai excitement!!

'nuf wit da French. I'm happy.
And Saturday, we hope to go laser-tagging all day. Dark Clothing is a must, and don't forget the lint brush (it's terrible when you wear a black t-shirt only to realize the lint glows in the black-light. *sigh*

I'm back to work at alst, after taking more than a week off b/c of my accident (doctor's orders). He now is sending me to physical therapy 3 times a week for 4 weeks. As if my schedule weren't already full with thrice-a-week chiropractor visits and twice-a-week night classes.

Speaking of which, I endured another abominably boring Math class. I wish I could ahve just gone in there, learned the 3 Power Equations (think electrical physics) and left. I already KNOW basic algebra. I already KNOW how to rearrange an equation 12 ways from tuesday.
ARGH.

At least Thursday nights I learn something new. I'm discovering just how little I knew about DC circuits. It doesn't help that I only ever work with AC at my job :P

Enough with the technical stuff.

Other news is that Alicia du Ontario may well be visiting me this February 18 for The Birthday (we have the same b-day! what are the odds?). The only info that still needs clarifying is how she's getting here. Driving? Flying? Bus?
And is she paying? Am I paying half? Will I just pay the whole cost? Last year they found out at the last second that their car had trouble, so they weren't able to come. So, being the heroic Knight on White Horse that I am, I paid for them to rent a car :)
Always good to have some money available. Gotta stop wasting it, though. Where HAS all that money gone?
Oh yeah. T-shirts. And Movies. And whatever else.
And 7-11. That store sucks money out of my pockets every time I get up too late to eat breakfast at home and pack a lunch.

Enough!
